Compassion is something that each and everyone of us should possess. Most dictionaries would define this word as one’s ability to treat other people kindly without passing judgement when things go awry. People who are romantically involved will definitely need this to maintain a healthy relationship. Remember that relationships are not always smooth sailing. There are times that you will enter an argument or perhaps hit what they call as a relationship itch. When dealing with these kinds of challenges, compassion will definitely help you to make the right judgment call.
Though compassion is innate to people, some have the tendency to shut it down completely, and this is where problems arise. A relationship with no compassion will definitely not last long. When compassion is taken out of the equation, people can do harm to others by being emotionally abusive, disrespectful, and violent. That is why having even a little compassion can certainly go a long way. This is because when we feel compassion we would be able to care about the feelings of others and we will have second thoughts about doing something that we know can hurt them or make them feel uncomfortable. When compassion is there, a couple would be more sensitive about each other’s feelings. They will be more careful about their actions and they will be able to think about the consequences of their behavior before doing anything.
Couples need to be compassionate towards each other in order to reach satisfying resolutions when conflict in the relationship present itself. If one or both of them shuts it down, then they are in for a more serious issue which can permanently damage their relationship. However, if one of them shows compassion and the other doesn’t, this can still be a problem since there would be imbalance in the relationship. The one showing compassion may feel abused and will also feel the need to be the one who have to patch things up every time they fight, which is definitely not healthy. It may seem like the right thing to do but if you evaluate things more carefully, you are just condoning the bad actions of your partner.
Basically, the main point is that with compassion in place, caring will always be in the picture, no matter how mad one may get. This means that in times of challenges in the relationship, the couple will think twice before doing something stupid. On the other hand, the moment compassion is thrown out of the picture, caring will automatically be non-existent.
